How Much Does a Barbell Weigh?
A standard Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (44.1 lb), and US gyms round it to 45 lb. A women's Olympic bar is 15 kg (33 lb). Specialty bars vary by brand. The table below gives typical ranges.
| Bar | Kilograms | Pounds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men's Olympic bar | 20 kg | 44.1 lb (counted as 45 lb) | 2.2 m long, 28–29 mm grip, 50 mm sleeves. IWF and IPF standard. |
| Women's Olympic bar | 15 kg | 33 lb (counted as 35 lb) | 2.01 m long, thinner 25 mm grip, no centre knurl. IWF standard. |
| Technique / training bar | about 5–10 kg | about 10–25 lb | Aluminium or light steel bars for learning lifts. Varies by brand. |
| EZ curl bar | about 7–12 kg | about 15–25 lb | Shorter cambered bar for curls and triceps work. Varies by brand. |
| Trap / hex bar | about 20–35 kg | about 45–75 lb | Varies a lot; many commercial hex bars are around 25 kg (55 lb). Often stamped on the bar. |
| Safety squat bar | about 25–32 kg | about 55–70 lb | Padded yoke and forward camber. Check the label. |
| Standard (1-inch) bar | about 5–11 kg | about 10–25 lb | Home-gym bars for small-hole plates. Weight depends on length. |
| Smith machine bar | about 0–25 kg effective | about 0–55 lb effective | Depends on the machine and counterbalance. Look for a label on the frame. |
Olympic bar dimensions follow the International Weightlifting Federation's technical rules; specialty bar weights are typical manufacturer ranges, not standards, so the bar's own label always wins. If there's no label, weigh it: stand on a bathroom scale holding the bar and subtract your bodyweight.
Bar weight and plate maths
Add the bar to twice the plates on one side. On a 45 lb bar: one 45 per side is 135 lb, two is 225 lb, three is 315 lb. On a 20 kg bar with 20 kg plates: 60, 100 and 140 kg. The plate calculator handles any bar, including a custom weight for trap bars and sleds.
Questions
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (44.1 lb), and US gyms count it as 45 lb. A women's Olympic bar weighs 15 kg (33 lb). Other bars, such as EZ curl, trap and safety squat bars, vary by maker, so check the label or weigh it.
Is the bar at my gym 45 lb?
If it is a full-length (about 7 ft / 2.2 m) Olympic bar with 2-inch sleeves, almost certainly yes, give or take a pound. Shorter bars, fixed-weight bars and bars with 1-inch sleeves are lighter.
How much does a Smith machine bar weigh?
It depends entirely on the machine. Some are counterbalanced to feel close to zero; others weigh 15–25 kg (30–55 lb). The weight is often printed on the frame. If not, ask staff or treat it as unknown and track the plates only.
Do I count the bar when I say how much I lift?
Yes. Lifts are always quoted as the total including the bar. A bench of "225" means a 45 lb bar plus two 45 lb plates on each side.
